How do I choose between WPC and WPI?

Deciding which protein powder you should consume is an important decision.
More and more the world is beginning to recognise the importance of protein powders and understand its many different purposes within the body.
Most of us know that a key role of proteins is for muscle growth & maintenance.
Additionally, the way we look at muscle is also evolving.
Typically, muscle is synonymous with bodybuilders and physique athletes, but today more are focused on muscle beyond just aesthetics.
Healthy adults are beginning to see that muscle plays a role in life and mobility for both men and women.
Individuals are looking to build or maintain muscle for :
Physical function with ageing
Body composition &
Overall health
Let’s take a closer look between the best protein choice for you and your goals.

What’s the difference between WPI and WPC?
Whey protein powder is widely considered the most nutritionally complete protein supplement. However, you’ve no doubt noticed that whey protein comes in two major forms – whey protein concentrate (WPC) and whey protein isolate (WPI). So, what are they? What are their individual benefits? And most importantly, which one is best going to help you achieve the results you’re after? It’s one of the most common questions we get asked at Pro Matrix and, while the differences between the two might be minimal, understanding what they are can be critical in assisting with your training and recovery.

A high quality protein supplement can help ensure your body has the amount of protein it needs.
Whey protein is one of the most popular supplements because it is easily digestible (bioavailable) it’s packed with a complete amino acid profile and its so affordable when you consider the quality of the product you’re getting!

How is Pro-Matrix whey protein powder made?
Pro Matrix sources our protein from grass fed dairy cows, which means that this very first step in the process already means you’re at a significant advantage by consuming our WPI and WPC powders.
Once the liquid whey has been separated from the curds in the cheese or yoghurt making process , it goes through a filtration process to strip out much of the fat and lactose content. Pro Matrix uses a method called “cross flow micro filtration” , which is an acid free and chemical free extraction process.
At this stage we have our WPC. A creamy flavoured grass fed whey protein.
To produce our WPI we go one step further and filter the protein a second time to remove more fats, carbs and sugars resulting in a purer protein of close to 95 grams of protein per 100 grams.

So which one is best for me?

When to Choose WPC:
WPC is closest to the natural form of whey, contains small amounts of fats and carbs and has a higher lactose content than WPI.
It takes longer to digest which makes WPC ideal for those who want to feel fuller for longer and it’s great for a high protein snack between meals!
It’s also a more cost effective option.

When to Choose WPI:
WPI is perfect when you want to get a fast digesting protein into your body after a workout or are looking to restrict the number of calories you are consuming.
WPI has a high protein percentage and lower carb and fat percentage and is suitable for those who are lactose intolerant or have sensitive stomachs.
Despite the higher overall price tag of WPI is still bang-for-your-buck as when you do a gram for gram comparison, you get more protein and less fats, carbs and sugar.

Poor quality powders contain fillers or are mixed with lower grade protein sources.
This reduces the costs of manufacturing but as a consequence the level of protein and type of amino acids aren’t ideal and have a reduced capability to support muscle protein synthesis and reduce muscle protein breakdown.

Whether you chose Pro Matrix WPC or WPI, all of Pro Matrix powders are from grass fed “happy” cows delivered to you in their “natural” and “native” state, which means the native compounds are undamaged and unchanged. This results in a superior product with premium nutritional benefits.
